Tsipras' crucial meetings in the US

The visit of the Greek Prime Minister to Chicago and Washington bears with it strong political, economic and diplomatic symbolism, and on Fridayy Alexis Tsipras leaves with the Greek mission for the United States.

Contacts with businessmen and Senators in Chicago

In the weekend of 14-16 October, the prime minister will be in Chicago where he will have "closed door meetings" with Greek-American businessmen and members of the Omogeneia.

Alexis Tsipras will attend an event at the Hellenic Museum in Chicago (which is organized by John Kalamos, who recently acquired control of National Insurance) and will give an address.

His program also includes meetings with Senators, members of Congress, the Mayor of Chicago and the Governor of Illinois.

Business visits

According to sound information, on his second day in Chicago, Mr. Tsipras will also visit businesses that are active in the following areas: tourism, real estate, high technology, infrastructure, agro-food, etc.

Crucial meetings with Trump-Lagarde

However, the main "menu" of the Greek Prime Minister's visit will take place in Washington, where he will go on Monday afternoon on October 16th.

Diplomatic sources report that their meetings will be scheduled in chronological order:

October 16: He will hold a private meeting with IMF chair Christine Lagarde. The main challenge for Athens is whether or not the Fund will remain in the Program.
October 17: Next Tuesday, is the Prime Minister's crucial meeting with US President Trump at the White House, which is also the main reason for the visit. The agenda will include: issues of economy, security (given the critical role played by Greece in the wider region) of energy (given the international interest in this issue but also the country's position) and regional developments.
October 18: The Greek Prime Minister will meet with vice president Mike Pence, for the first time.

Speech at Brookings

As diplomatic sources report, during his stay in Washington the Prime Minister will also attend the well-known Brookings Think Tank, which he had visited in 2013. This time he will be speaking to an audience of diplomats, businessmen and journalists.

The main axes of the speech will bee three-fold: "Greece as a pillar of stability, as a reliable partner in the strategic relationship of the two countries and Greece as an investment destination."

Who will accompany Tsipras

The prime minister will be accompanied by his wife Betty Baziana.

On the Greek mission for Chicago - the first "stop" of the visit to the United States, will be: Digital Policy Minister Nikos Pappas, Development Minister Dimitris Papadimitriou and Defense Minister and President of ANEL Panos Kammenos, as well as, the Deputy Foreign Minister responsible for expatriate Hellenism Terence Quick.
