Greek Maria Sakkari was successful against Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko at the Australian Open on Monday.
The World No 43 took out her 22nd-ranked opponent in three sets inside Melbourne Arena, with results at 6-1, 3-6, 6-2.
The third game was catalytic to Sakkari’s win after she was handed an early advantage following a double fault by Ostapenko.
Not only did Sakkari win the match, she also won the support of the crowd thanks to a vocal group of Greek supporters.
The 23-year-old will now face Australian World No 232 Astra Sharma in her second round match, after the qualifier defeated compatriot Priscilla Hon in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-1.
The results are particularly encouraging for Greece following the success by Stefanos Tsitsipas against Italy’s Matteo Berrettini earlier in the day.
